This thriving town loses the hustle of the nearby big city and slows things down to a calmer pace. From fishing and boating on the region’s numerous lakes to hiking on the trail, check out our favorite parks in the area.

1. Ray Roberts Lake State Park

This park has so many activities that it may be impossible to visit the whole thing in one day. Fortunately, the park is a great place for camping and has both small campsites and large RV pitches.
The big draw of the park is the lake. This lake boasts a beach and a contained swimming area, making it perfect for families with small children. Fishing and boating are also popular pastimes, and the Lone Star Lodge offers patrons delicious food with a stunning view of the lake.

2. Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center

This great outdoor space offers a wide variety of activities. Trails wind through prairies, wetlands, and forests, offering hikers a glimpse of diverse wildlife.
The Heritage Center occasionally offers free workshops about gardening, composting, and other ways you can be more eco-friendly. Check their calendar for a list of upcoming events. Visitors are advised to bring bug-spray and stay on the trails, as they have been known to become muddy after rains.

3. South Lakes Park

This park is known for having a huge playground for the kids, but adults can have fun too. Volleyball, tennis, and basketball courts are all available, and there are plenty of shaded tables and benches to relax on after a game.
A nature trail that winds around two ponds is a nice place for an easy afternoon stroll. One of the ponds is stocked with fish, but to watch out for the hungry pelicans that love to steal them.

4. Denton Katy Trail- Hiking and Cycling Greenbelt

We honestly think this trail is better suited for cycling because it is mostly concrete. The Denton portion of the Katy Trail starts downtown and covers eight miles until it reaches nearby Corinth. The trail follows the path of an abandoned railroad track.
The Denton section of the trail is part of a much larger rail line that extended from Missouri through Kansas and into Texas. Parts of the trail are slowly being recovered across those three states. The name Katy comes from the name of the line- MKT.

5. Water Works Park

While we usually think of parks as green places full of nature, we wanted to include one different type on our list. This popular water park is the place for lazy rivers, waterslides, and family fun in the sun.
Make sure to check their website for new hours of operation.
