Kia K3: The Kia Rio Replacement

The Kia Rio has been a staple sedan for Kia since 1999. Now in its fourth generation, 2023 is the last year for Rio. Starting in 2024, the all-new Kia K3 will replace the Rio in Kia’s all-star sedan lineup. This article will break down all its features and what this new model will offer drivers in the next year and beyond, so keep reading to learn more about the latest Kia K3.

Kia K3 Announcement

Kia officially announced the new Kia K3 during a premiere event in Mexico City in August 2023. While the exact date the Kia K3 will be available in America is still unknown, the automaker has said, “The all-new Kia K3 will be available in select markets starting in the fourth quarter of the year” (2023).

Kia K3 Measurements

Kia’s new K3 is 178.9 inches long, 69.5 inches wide, and 58.1 inches tall, with a wheelbase that covers 105.1 inches. The trunk will have 19.2 cubic feet of storage room. The K3 will be 3.8 inches shorter and have 1.2 inches less between the wheels than the Kia Forte. Still, compared to the model it’s replacing, the Rio, the K3 will be 6.3 inches longer and have a wheelbase that’s 3.5 inches longer.

Exterior

During the K3’s announcement event, Kia said the new model was designed to “redefine the subcompact segment.” Part of this reinvention is a crossover-inspired exterior design resembling the Polestar 2. The K3’s exterior look is also heavily influenced by the brand’s “Opposites United” design philosophy. Under this philosophy, which blends contradictory concepts such as technology and nature, the K3 has a futuristic shape.

The brand-new Kia K3 will have exciting exterior features such as a fastback-style silhouette, an aggressive front end, and unique LED daytime running headlights. These sweptback headlights are part of the K3’s Tiger Nose grille, which the manufacturer has redesigned for a bolder look. This grille flows perfectly into the black applications in the wheel arches and double-line beltline that grows from the fender.

Other notable exterior features of the K3 include an integrated rear spoiler above taillights connected by a singular illuminated strip. Those who want an even sportier-looking K3 can choose the GT-Line trim, which offers a more aggressive front bumper, two exhaust tips, and larger 17-inch alloy wheels.

Engine and Performance

At launch, the Kia K3 will have three engine options: a 1.6-liter four-cylinder, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, or a 1.4-liter motor. The 1.6-liter engine produces 121 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque, and you can pair it with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

If you opt for the GT-Line trim, you’ll get the 2.0-liter motor that generates 150 hp and 142 lb-ft of torque and is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. While Kia hasn’t announced specific details about the 1.4-liter option, they promised this engine will be “expert-oriented.”

The K3’s reinforced structure provides more safety during a crash and makes for a more enjoyable driving experience. This structure reduces vibration and improves sound insulation at a level comparable to luxury vehicles. Likewise, Kia designed the K3’s suspension to provide the ideal balance between comfort and control.

Interior and Technology

Matching its exterior, the Kia K3 promises a modern and sleek interior featuring high-quality materials and top-notch amenities. The centerpiece of the dashboard is the K3’s integrated instrument cluster and panoramic infotainment system, which seamlessly merge for a singular, easy-to-navigate display.

The 10.25-inch high-resolution touch-screen infotainment system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring easy and wireless smartphone integration. Additionally, with several USB Type-C ports throughout the cabin, everyone can charge their devices on the go.

A two-zone automatic climate control system with two rear air vents ensures each passenger can maintain the best temperature for them. Finally, the K3 has a unique 64-color ambient lighting system to customize your ride to suit your current mood.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The K3 has standard safety features, including six airbags, ABS, and an electronic stability control program. Still, Kia has yet to confirm whether the K3 will come standard with Kia DriveWise, Kia’s suite of available advanced driver-assistance and safety features engineered to help you drive anywhere as safely as possible. Regardless, Kia DriveWise will likely be available for future K3 drivers who want it.

Kia Drive Wise includes, but isn’t limited to:

  • Auto emergency braking technology: Detects potential collisions and applies the brakes to prevent or reduce the effects of a possible collision.
  • Blind-spot collision-avoidance assist and collision warning: This feature detects objects in your blind spot and gives you audible signals to warn you of potential hazards outside your field of view. If the system determines you’re trying to change lanes while an object is detected, it will return you to your original lane.
  • Blind-spot view monitor: This monitor displays a live view of the adjacent lane when you activate your left or right turn signal to eliminate or reduce blind spots.
  • Smart cruise control with stop and go: Maintains a predetermined following distance from the detected vehicle before you, adjusting driving speed as needed.
  • Surround view monitor: Provides a 360-degree bird’s-eye view of your surroundings.
  • Remote start parking assist: You can navigate your Kia outside the vehicle via the smart key fob.
  • Safe exit warning: This feature provides an audible warning if rear passengers attempt to open a door while another approaching vehicle is detected.
  • Rear cross-traffic collision avoidance alert: Warns you if the system detects vehicle cross traffic and, if necessary, automatically applies the brakes.
