Teach the kids how to swim while also being part of a huge event to break a world record. Take part in the World’s Largest Swim Lesson Day by heading down to the Denton Civic Center Pool at 10 a.m. on June 22. Make sure to register in advance. Swimming pools across the country will be hosting similar events in honor of global drowning prevention, a leading cause of death for children.

Your kids will have fun splashing around while learning a potentially life-saving skill. The event is open to kids aged 6 and older and is free to attend.

Golf Scramble

Summer isn’t just for kids; adults can enjoy some summer fun as well at events such as the Golf Scramble. This golf event occurs every month, with the first summer gathering taking place on June 20. The scramble is one of the most well-known formats for golf tournaments and involves teams of two players. Each team member hits their own ball throughout the match, then chooses the best of the two shots, and each player uses that spot. The teams then play every hole this way until they finish the course.

Simply pay $30 for admission and test your golf skills at the North Lakes Recreation Center on June 20, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Outdoor Science with Attitude Summer Camp

Your kids can explore the great outdoors, especially the diverse plant and animal life contained within it, with the Outdoor Science with Attitude Summer Camp. Denton County Master Gardeners and Elm Fork Master Naturalists will guide kids through the world of nature and teach them about all the fascinating things that they can find in the local area.

The camp takes place over four days between June 26 and June 29 at Clear  Creek Heritage Center. Your kids can join in from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. every day. You’ll need to supply your kids with comfortable and safe clothing as well as supplies for walking around in nature, including closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, basic snacks, and water.

Make Music Day

Do you have a musical ear? Do you love singing or playing your favorite instrument? Go ahead and take part in Make Music Day on June 21, which will be taking place in over 1,000 cities throughout the world, including Denton. The main event takes place on the Historic Denton County Courthouse lawn, but musicians and singers of all kinds are encouraged to get together and play in public.

Whether you love jazz, classical music, hip-hop, rap, rock, country, or any other genre of music, your musical creations are welcome. Brighten up the streets and parks of Denton by adding some music to our community.

Family Camp Out

Some families love going camping in the summer, but for others, a trip out into the wilderness may seem a little intimidating. Alternatively, you might love camping but want to introduce your children to it in a safer environment close to home. If you want to experience the joys of camping without the risk, you can attend the Family Camp Out at South Lakes Park and Eureka Playground.

Register in advance for the event, then bring your tent with you and enjoy an evening of s’mores, campfires, dinner, and games. Fall asleep under the stars, and spend the night camping in the park.

Though you do need to provide all your own camping equipment, every family that registers receives two meals and s’mores. The event costs $70 to attend and starts at 3 p.m. on June 10.

Drawing and Painting Camp

Do you have an artist in the family? Enroll them in a drawing and painting camp at the Wildflower Art Studios. Kids will learn to create all different kinds of art, from pencil and ink drawing to watercolor painting. Not only will they have fun experimenting with art and learning, but they’ll also get to bring home their artwork at the end of the week so you can put them up in the house and admire them.

There are two camps available, separated by age: one for children in kindergarten to second grade, and another for children in the third to fifth grade. Register as soon as possible, as this camp is quite popular in Denton and tends to fill up quickly. The camp costs $185 and takes place June 12-15 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Dive-In Movie

Instead of a typical night, try this fun event combining watching movies and fun in the water. Hosted by Denton Parks and Recreation, the Dive in Movie event takes place on July 7 at 2400 Long Road in Denton at Water Works Park. It includes a wave pool and kiddie splash area, so the whole family can cool off in the water after a long, hot, Texas summer day.

The event starts at 7:30 p.m., and the movie itself (The Bad Guys) starts at 9 p.m. (after sundown), at which time the kiddie splash area will close. However, the wave pool will remain open with floating seats where you can relax and watch the movie. You can purchase snacks and beverages at the Tidal Wave Cafe.

From art classes and music days to campouts and poolside movies, summer in Denton is full of a large variety of exciting activities. Make sure you have the space to drive the whole family around safely and comfortably this summer, and stop by Huffines Kia Corinth to check out the new cars we have available.
