Ray Roberts Lake State Park
Located about 15 miles north of Denton, Ray Roberts Lake State Park is the perfect place to escape the city and reconnect with nature. The 29,000-acre Ray Roberts Lake offers the opportunity to catch catfish, largemouth bass, white bass, and crappie. The lake has several marinas, boat ramps, fish cleaning stations, and a fishing pier for you to use. Plus, while you’re in the state park, you can fish from the shore or a pier without a fishing license. If the fish aren’t biting, the park also offers hiking trails, swimming, and camping.
Grapevine Lake
If you travel 18 miles south of Denton, you’ll discover the 8,000-acre Grapevine Lake. This lake is home to numerous fish species, including largemouth bass, white bass, spotted bass, channel catfish, white crappie, and alligator gar. If you have your own fishing boat, you can use one of the 12 boat ramps to get access to the lake. If you don’t have a boat, you can rent one from a marina. You’ll also find various campgrounds and hiking, biking, and equestrian trails around the lake.
Pilot Knoll Park
Pilot Knoll Park is located about 9 miles southeast of Denton on Lewisville Lake. Depending on the water level of the lake, the park covers between 65 and 85 acres. If you want to try your luck at fishing, Pilot Knoll Park offers a boat ramp for convenient access to the lake. Or you can take advantage of the kayak and paddleboard rentals to enjoy more time on the water. When you’re ready to head to land, the park has picnic areas, sand volleyball courts, and cornhole boards.
Stewart Creek Park
Located on the opposite side of Lewisville Lake from Pilot Knoll Park is Stewart Creek Park. One highlight of the park is the 88-foot-long fishing pier. The pier has two uncovered extensions on both sides when you want to enjoy some sun while you’re fishing. It also has a covered main area if you’re looking for a little shade or you simply want to sit back and take in the lovely view of the lake.
South Lakes Park
Another great option for fishing in Denton is South Lakes Park. This 187-acre city park is the perfect place to introduce young anglers to the sport of fishing. The park has two ponds stocked with rainbow trout, blue catfish, and channel catfish. Plus, you can make a day out of your trip to the park by enjoying the picnic area, playground, walking trails, sand volleyball court, basketball court, and tennis courts.
