  1. Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center

If you’re looking for some fun outdoors, Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center is always the perfect place. The center, located right in Denton, is a gateway to more than 2,900 acres of bottomland hardwood forest. Here, you’ll find designated hiking trails that are family-friendly and take you on a complete tour of the forest and the wildlife found within. Speaking of which, during your hike, there’s a good chance you’ll find everything from waterfowl to beavers, creatures you don’t typically see.
You can also schedule a professional tour of the forest by contacting the center’s tour guides. All of this is completely free and a great way to get some fresh air.

  1. Parks and Trails

Of course, Clear Creek isn’t the only place where you can spend some time outdoors for free. Denton is home to various different parks, playgrounds, and walking trails perfect for groups, family members, or just you and a friend. In the area, you’ll find Avondale Park, MLK Jr. Recreational Center Park, South Lakes Park and Eureka Playground, Bowling Green Park and Community Garden, McKenna Park, and many more. A majority of locations also have hiking and biking trails, and you can even camp out at some if you’d like.

  1. Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum

If you’re interested in learning more about the history of Denton, Texas, and the area around it, you can check out the county’s free museums. For one, there’s the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum, located on West Hickory Street. Here, you’ll discover the rich history of Denton County and how it was founded. Lectures, exhibits, and more can all be found in this 1896-built building.

  1. Denton County Historical Park

Then there’s Denton County Historical Park. The county touts this location as “a hub for residents and visitors to grow and learn together.” Located on West Mulberry Street, the park is home to the Bayless-Selby House, the Quakertown House museum, and the county’s welcome center. At each of these properties, you’ll witness what it was like to live in Denton many years ago. To make the attraction lively, you’ll find regularly hosted free community events, live music, storytelling, and more. All in all, it’s a great spot to spend the day if you’re on a budget.
